‘3pm in Avignon’
‘오후 세시의 아비뇽’
겐타 씨는 지난 9월 동네 귀퉁이에서 작게 전시를 열었을 때 우연히 그림을 구매해 가신 분이다. 이후에 너무나 감사하게도 그림을 알리고 싶다며 본인의 앤틱 상점에서 전시를 하지 않겠냐고 제안을 해주셨다. 도쿄의 어느작은 공간속, 겐타 씨가 프랑스에서 모아온 아주 오래된 것들과 나의 하나밖에 없는 종이 그림들은 잘 어울릴 수밖에 없었다.
우리는 다른 언어로 이야기하지만 같은 생각을 가지고 있었는데, ‘인간이 정성스럽게 손으로 만든 것의 아름다움’이란 어떤 것으로도 대처할 수 없다는 생각이다. 그것들이 더 대단하다는 것은 아니고, 그저 시간이 지나 재가 되어도 이 땅에, 공기에 남아있을 것이라는 확고한 믿음이다.
아무리 세상의 모든 것이 디지털로, 인공지능으로 대처할 수 있을지라도 재가 되어버리는 존재하는 것은 대처할 수 없을 것이다. 잊혀져 가고 있었던, 오래전 누군가의 거친 손으로 만든 작은 것들과 내가 종이 위에 그린 그림들이 함께 조용히 아름다운 소리를 내는 전시가 되었으면 한다.
Genta is the person whom I met when I had a small exhibition in Avignon. The day after, he asked me why not do an exhibition at his place in Tokyo. Somehow, the old things he collected from France and my watercolor paintings on paper complemented each other perfectly.
We use different languages but share the same thought: things made by hand with true heart can never be replaced by anything else in the world. It doesn’t mean the superiority of human beings; it’s about the belief in existence.
Material existence will not be replaced by the metaverse or an AI world, even if it becomes ash, turns to soil, or evaporates into the air.I wish that his old collections, crafted by someone in the old days, and my watercolor work could create a subtle, beautiful harmony.
